We Walk UHNITED

With Deep Gratitude for Dr. Sean Patrick Cleary

We are walking to honour the life and legacy of Dr. Cleary. His sudden passing leaves a massive void, but the lives he changed carry on his profound impact.

Dr. Cleary was my (Frances) surgeon in 2012 for a Whipple, and again in 2024 for a total pancreatectomy. More than just a great surgeon, he was a wonderful person to speak with. His knowledge and accessible communication style brought clarity to things that were complicated and confusing. He conveyed a sense of urgency without causing panic.

Dr. Cleary's humour and kindness humanized and brought warmth to what was otherwise a daunting experience for me. Even during post-op complications in 2012, when I was readmitted to Toronto General Hospital and placed in various wards (because there was no space in his) – he always found me. Dr. Cleary checked on me every day, would let me know if he was going to be away, and who would be checking on me when he was unable to.

While I think that anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Cleary would agree that he was a remarkable person, it wasn't until after his passing that I learned of his accomplishments and contributions to both the Canadian and American medical communities.

During his career at UHN, Dr. Cleary established a research program in cancer epidemiology and also became Program Lead of UHN's Robotic Surgery Program, where he played a pivotal role in shaping one of the largest and most advanced robotic surgery programs in Canada.

It was that expertise as an academic surgeon that led to Dr. Cleary being recruited in 2017 to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. There, he accepted the position as Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Division of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery.

In 2023, Dr. Cleary returned to his role at UHN, while also serving as the Bernard and Ryna Langer Chair of the Division of General Surgery at the University of Toronto. He held leadership roles as President of both the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA) and the Canadian Association of General Surgeons (CAGS), in addition to being a fellow and member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons.

This is our first We Walk UHNITED, and while our goal is small, we hope to exceed it this year and build on it every year going forward.

Thank you,

Frances Cheung
