Taking strides to support vital hospital services

It's easy to take good health for granted until a crisis hits.

When Larry needed emergency surgery to deal with pockets of infection in his brain two years ago, I was able to get an inside look at how the health system springs into action for a critical care health condition.

Larry was admitted to Toronto Western Hospital on May 10 and had two rounds of brain surgery (on May 11 and May 20) as well as a May 18 procedure to drain areas of infection near his spine.

The surgeries went well. However, the surgeries, along with large doses of antibiotic treatment, couldn’t eradicate the deep-seated infection, which eventually overwhelmed his body’s defences and caused organ dysfunction. He died of sepsis on June 18.

Although UHN's medical teams at Toronto Western Hospital couldn't save Larry, despite more than a month of intensive care treatment, I'm grateful for their diligent efforts and the support of the nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists, social workers and other hospital staff.
