Heart Transplant

I started going to Toronto General after I met Dr Downar’s colleague on an airplane while at work.  Within a week I was fortunate to meet Dr Downar in his office.  From there I started with many tests to investigate why I was losing strength in my arms while running.  Dr Downar never gave up to find why I was weakening.
During a CT Scan it was a technician that noticed a difference in the right side of my right ventricle.  From then I was closely watched under Dr Downar’s care for Cardio myopathy.  Both Dr Ralph and Dr Cusimano were involved in the many surgeries going forward, until I needed a defibrillator.  That surgery was complicated in itself but with the intelligence  and care of  both NP Nancy and Dr Downar, a defibrillator was successfully inserted after three different attempts.
Years later my heart was weakening and I was introduced to Dr Alba and team through Dr Spears.  I was fortunate to have a team of great doctors looking after me so closely.  Then it came time to talk Heart Transplant.  After testing to go on the list, I succeeded to the next level to be on the transplant list.  I am O+ so I was advised that the wait might be longer.  I had a stroke seven months after going on the list due to the weaken of my heart and blood clots in my brain.
This time was very stressful on me and my family.  I was trying to stay strong and also trying to absorb  all the information and accept the changes but still had emotional times.  There were many visits and communication with the hospital until I had to be kept in the hospital because it wasn’t safe to remain at home.  I’m thankful to Stella and Tina from the Mediley Program with daily conversations and assistance each day.    I was advised I go to the hospital because I was in constant heart failure, that drive to the hospital was the longest drive ever and likely should have been done by ambulance.  
Waiting in hospital was even more stressful with juggling Covid outbreaks.  I’m thankful to have been cared for by NP Meredith and Nadia.    Doctors did a great job keeping me stable to await transplant.   My prayers continued to wait for a donor heart.  Until one Friday night I received a call that “the perfect” heart was found.  I was surrounded by all my family including my seven year old grand child that wouldn’t leave my side and stayed until I went into surgery at 3AM.
I’m so blessed to be given the chance for this next chapter.  I’m excited to represent TGH and Heart Links to give back to the doctors, nurses and technicians that brought me to this point in my life.  
I have been fortunate to see my grandson born, to enjoy life with my beautiful grand daughter and now awaiting another grand child soon.
This hospital has been part of my life for the last 15 yrs and I advocate for heart disease.  This runs in my family and I want to provide resources for this next generation.  I love my family very much and it’s important to me to walk for the future of health care.
